1 Cloth Embroidery
A variety of exquisite needlework, practised by the natives of India, Persia, China and Japan. Coloured pieces of cloth are cut in handsome designs and sewn together with floss silk or gold and silver thread. The work is really inlaid applique. -
2 Cloth Applique
A modern imitation of Eastern " cloth embroidery." It consists of cutting out variously coloured and shaped pieces of the same material and stitching them on to a coloured cloth foundation. -
3 Hardanger Cloth
A special cloth used for needlework and embroidery. It is woven 40-in. wide and from mercerised yams in 2 & 2 mat or basket weave. The finish is soft and usually in white, ecru and light helio. The term comes from the Hardanger needlework of the peasants in Norway, who used a coarse bleached linen cloth and ornamented it with coloured embroidery designs. -
4 Lance Embroidery
A modern embroidery used for working borders to tablecloths and curtains. A band of cloth is stitched on to the material (in contrasting colours) and embroidery in the lance stitch and other stitches is done on this band as well as on the main material at each side. -
5 Cordovan Embroidery
A form of applique work using gold or silver cloth and serge. A bold design is traced on the gold or silver cloth, this is cut out and placed upon thick canvas and the two pasted together. The canvas is then cut out to the pattern when the paste is dry. These motifs are then stitched on to a ground fabric of wool serge with silk thread. 6 Basket Cloth
A cotton fabric of fancy matt style, with 2, 3 or 4 ends and picks working together of heavy yams.. An average cloth is made 42-in., 48-ends, 34 picks per inch, 2/20's warp, 8's weft. The line drawing gives the weave and the photograph the cloth known as Connaught embroidery cloth. Also a plain cloth woven with coloured warp and weft yams, such as black and white, red and white, in a matt weave such as 52 X 40, 16's/10's

7 Mummy Cloth
A fabric resembling crepe, composed of silk warp and wool weft in the best qualities, with cotton warp in lower grades, and used as mourning in black because of its lustreless surface. Fine closely woven plain linen fabric used in ancient Egypt for wrapping mummies. The best examples have two-fold warp and single weft and two or three times as many warp ends as picks. One example has 140 ends and 64 picks per inch, 100's linen warp and weft. One wrapping cloth from a mummy contained 540 threads of warp per inch. Unbleached, plain woven, heavy linen or cotton fabrics, used as a ground cloth for embroidery is known as mummy. A crinkled lustreless black cloth made with cotton warp and wool weft is called momie cloth. -
8 Arabian Embroidery
Work done by Arab women from very ancient times. The designs are very elaborate, geometrical figuring done with floss silk on muslin or cloth in brilliant colours. Algerian embroidery is the same.Dictionary of the English textile terms > Arabian Embroidery

9 Bark Cloth
A cloth on the American market used for the manufacture of shopping bags, book covers and embroidery mats. It is the product of an East African tree of the genus " fiscus." The fibre is easily spun although the staple is short. -

A cotton fabric for embroidery work, better known as basket cloth. -
11 Japanese Native Cloth

A polished yarn silk cloth woven like honeycomb, used for embroidery foundation. -
13 Mastic Cloth
A canvas fabric for embroidery purposes. Woven in alternate stripes of basket weave in cotton, and 5-shaft satin in silk. The stripes are about 3-in. or 4-in. wide and the cloth is 56-in. wide. -
14 Baden Embroidery
A variety of Applique work, in which motifs such as leaves and flowers (often hand painted) are cut out and sewn on to a foundation cloth, of a contrasting colour. The motifs are edged with chain stitch and the veins worked out in the herringbone or feather stitch. -
15 Genoese Embroidery

16 Roman Embroidery
This type of work is very durable and is done with washable materials. The design is drawn on ecru linen or fine cotton cloth, the outlines are run over with ecru thread, then with ecru silk and button hole stitches. The parts of the pattern are connected with bars and wheels. The ecru linen is cut away where no pattern is formed and the work is attached to coloured silk or velvet as desired. -
17 Angola Cloth
A cotton embroidery fabric, dyed cream colour, woven in small check effects of the diaper style. Yarns are about 18's to 24's for both warp and weft, and in various reeds and picks, but all low to give an open fabric. Made in 54-in. -
18 Egyptian Cloth
An open canvas fabric made of coarse cotton yarns and used for wool embroidery. -
